We will learn the basics of Adobe Illustrator and design posters. You will get a fortune cookie, and you must create an interesting, dynamic, eye-catching design. Use what you learn about composition, fonts and typography.

8th grade: Artistic Selfie Collage

1. Complete the photography worksheets using the link below and the flashcards: 

13 Lessons to teach your child about photography

2. Check out cameras. Follow Ms. Fowler's directions on setting up your camera.

3. Take 20 to 30 pictures that show who you are. Try close-ups, blurry or out of focus shots, different expressions, different angles, poses, disguises, objects, etc. 

4. Import pictures to your computer.

5. Create a collage designs of your photos using Photoshop. You can cut your pictures up, add words, repeat things, change the color, use filters, adjust the transparency, etc. The size should be "U.S. Paper" or 8.5 inches wide by 11 inches tall. 300ppi.

Ideas? Here is some inspiration. (Page blocked for students, Ms. Fowler will show).

6. Save your collage to the HAND IN FINAL WORK folder as "YourLastNameCollage".

8th Digital ARts: Yearbook

Your class has been hired to create artwork for the title page of this year’s yearbook. Use Photoshop to turn an ordinary picture of the school building into a work of art! All of the instructions can also be found on caarts.blogspot.com

Directions:

1. Chose and photo and copy to your desktop. Go to Fowler Classroom > Materials > School Photos.
2. Drag the photo onto the PS icon to open it in Photoshop
3. Make the photo more interesting. Change it from a dull, wintery photo into something more fun!
4. Try images adjustments. Go to Image (at the top) > Adjustments. Try the different menus. “Vibrance”, “Hue/Saturation” and “Color Balance” will all change your picture dramatically.
5. Now try Filters. Go to Filter (at the top) > Filter Gallery. Go through the folders to try different filters. You will notice whatever colors you have chosen will be used in the filters, so you may want to change your colors.
6. If you know how to use Photoshop, you may want to try cutting and pasting in parts of other pictures. You can use the “copyright free” photos links on caarts to look for other photos.
7. If you need some inspiration, look at the past student examples HERE
8. When you are finished, save a final copy into your folder, and the HAND IN WORK folder. Name it YourLastNameYearbook.psd

You have only this class to finish. One chosen project will receive a free yearbook!

6th Icebreaker: Collaborative Doodle

Directions:

1. Ms. Fowler will group you up.
2. Draw a doodle for each category. 
3. Talk with your group about your answers.
4. Share something about 3 other people in your group.

            20 sticks of spaghetti (uncooked!)

            one yard of mask­ing tape (stick down on edge of desk)

            one yard of string

            one pair scissors

            5 marshmallows

Direc­tions:

1. You have 20 min­utes to use the mate­ri­als to try to build the tallest free­stand­ing struc­ture.  
2. (“Free­stand­ing” means it can­not be taped down, and you can’t be hold­ing it when the time runs out- it must be able to stand on its own.)  
3. When the time is up, we will mea­sure the struc­tures that are stand­ing and announce the win­ner.

7th Icebreaker: Group Drawing by Instruction

One person will be the artist for the group.

3 other people will take turns directing.

Look at the hidden, example artwork. Give the artist instructions on one part at a time, using only descriptive words. You cannot touch or point to the paper. For example: "Cut a square out of the orange paper that is about 1 inch by 1 inch. Glue it in the middle of the paper, about a third from the top."

This activity helps you work together collaboratively, helps critical-thinking skills and helps you to communicate with only visual words.
